Comparative study of two surfactant from polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate family for preparation of ThO2 nanoparticles

Abstract
In this research, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate-80 (PSM-80) and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate-20 (PSM-20) surfactants were used for preparation of ThO2 fuel powders. (PSM-20) and (PSM-80) surfactants were applied to provide suitable porosity in nuclear fuel texture. The surface tension, and interfacial tension were investigated for PSM-80 and PSM-20 surfactants. The slow micellization of PSM-80 would be the reason for the higher surface tension and interfacial tension values of PSM-80. ThO2 particles were characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses. Results show that ThO2 particles prepared using PSM-80 has larger granulation.
