The effect of different light variables on spirulina growth and its component

This study aimed to investigate the effect of light emitting diodes with different wavelength (red, blue and white) and various cycle (24-0 and 12-12 light/dark duration) on the growth of Spirulina platensis and its component. The maximum growth of spirulina was taken place under red light and 24-0 light/dark cycle. According to the results, the red light produces the highest amount of biomass and the blue light produces the lowest amount. Besides 24-0 light/dark cycle has the better effect on biomass growth in comparison with 12-12 L/D cycle. On the other hand, the blue light has the best effect on protein content when the protein was measured based on mg per gr of dry weight. However blue light produces the lowest amount of biomass but has better effect on production of cellular components like protein.
