Extraction and Characterization of Amorphous Silica from Rice Husk for Adsorption Applications

Abstract
The use of agricultural waste as an adsorbent because of its low cost, high abundance and environmental friendliness can be a good alternative to synthetic adsorbents. A combined open burned/high temperature furnace heat treatment method was examined to obtain silica from rice husk (RH) collected from rice lands of IRAN. The application of the obtained silica as adsorbent was also studied through adsorption of methylene blue. A white amorphous silica powder with efficiency of 20±2 %wt (silica/RH) and purity of 94% was obtained. The results of adsorption experiment showed that efficiency of this bioadsorbent for removal of methylene blue reached to 67% after five hours.
