Study on hydrodynamic properties of Airlift bioreactor in production of the bacterial cellulose

Histerin Schramm (HS) medium has traditonally used for culturing cellulose producing bacteria and HS medium was used in the present study to evaluate hydrodynamic behavior of a laboratory constructed airlift bioreactor (ALR). Values of the gas holdup (εg) and mixing time (tm) obtained for the culture medium with those tested for air-water system in air flow rate in the range of 0.5-2.5 vvm. For the HS medium and air-water system in low air flow rate( <1.5 vvm) no significant difference was observed in εg and tm . The presence of inorganic salts in the HS medium affected to εg and tm in high air flow rate (>1.5 vvm), the εg and tm for the HS medium was 1.3 higher and 1.2 lower than air-water system respectively.
