Parametric Study in Catalytic Production of Ethylene Oxide through Ag-Cs/Al2O3 Catalyst

Abstract
Ethylene oxide (EO) catalytic production is one of the key process in petrochemical industry. Operation condition investigation can lead to obtain optimal condition for improving reactor products. Effect of reactor temperature and pressure, chlorine moderator and carbon dioxide as feed impurities on ethylene oxide selectivity and ethylene conversion are investigated in this research. SEM shows agglomeration of silver particles after reactor test on the catalyst surfaces. Presence of carbon dioxide in the reactor feed leads to create a resistance against ethylene oxide production by increasing temperature from 210 to 220 0C. Decreasing pressure from 18 to 2 bar does not have significant effect on ethylene conversion while, increasing selectivity from 88 to 95% is achieved. Optimum value of chlorine moderator is about 1.5 ppm, mole% for this commercial catalyst. Besides, optimum temperature for the best performance of catalyst is 215 0C in the studied temperature range.
