Study on the Extraction of Amorphous Silica from Rice Husk

Abstract
Rice husk is an abundant agricultural residue, comprising cellulose, lignin, and silica. Here, the possibility of silica extraction from rice husk of Babolsar (north of Iran) through a chemical route has been studied. Amorphous precipitated silica was extracted from rice husk ash during three successive stages, namely decarbonization, dissolution and acid precipitation. XRD and XRF results confirmed the production of high purity amorphous silica. Moreover, it was observed that it is possible to produce silica with both sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, but precipitation with sulfuric acid is more appropriate.
