Synthesis and Characterization of Cerium Oxide Loaded ZnO for Biodiesel Production

This work is aimed to produce biodiesel from low-quality oil by heterogeneous catalysts. Accordingly, the ZnO and ceria loaded-ZnO were prepared through the hydrothermal method and employed in biodiesel production. As-made nanocatalysts were analyzed via different techniques listed as XRD, FESEM, and BET-BJH. The results revealed that the nanocatalysts have successfully synthesized and they have a porous structure which is a suitable point for them. Also, the ceria loaded-ZnO has higher pore volume and specific surface area compared to the ZnO. The catalytic performance tests were carried out at 110°C for 3 hours, with the methanol/oil molar ratio of 12 and catalyst loading of 5% by weight. The result showed high performance for ceria loaded-ZnO in which the tri-glyceride, oleic acid, and total conversion were determined 70, 92 and 87% respectively.
