Synthesis and Evaluation of non-Precious Metal-Carbon Nanocomposite Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract
Non-platinum metal-Carbon electrocatalyst (Co/ZrO2-NG) was synthesized as a cathode electrode
for the oxygen reduction reaction. Nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) was first synthesized by the
solvothermal method. The ZrO2-NG composite support of this electrocatalyst was then synthesized
by the co-precipitation method and the cobalt particles were deposited on the prepared support.
The morphology was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confirmed the
nanoflower-like structure. The results of cyclic voltammetry (CV) in oxygen saturated 0.1 M KOH
solution also showed that the synthesized electrocatalyst has obtained 65% of the commercial Pt/C
activity. Chronoamperometric results demonstrated good stability and durability for the Co/ZrO2-
NG.
