Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant by SnO2 nanoparticles in aqueous solution

Abstract
In this study, the photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) was investigated in aqueous solution using SnO2 nanoparticles as a nano photocatalyst in the presence of UV light. The UV/Vis Spectrophotometer was used to analyze the concentration of 2,4-DCP in the solution. The degradation was carried out under different conditions including the photocatalyst amount, initial concentration and pH of the solution. Synthesized SnO2 NPs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The photocatalyltic activity of the SnO2 was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of initial concentration 10mg/l of 2,4-DCP. Optimum value of catalyst dose was found to be 0.05 g/L and degradation after 3h was 47%. The degradation of 2,4-DCP followed a first-order reaction kinetics.
