Photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B dye in aqueous solution by ZnO nanoparticles

Abstract
In this research, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using sol-gel method. The characteristics of the produced nano ZnO were investigated using X–ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) was investigated under UV, (UV+ZnO) and (Dark+ZnO).The highest degradation was achieved when experiment was performed under UV irradiation with ZnO NPs (UV+ZnO). The photocatalytic degradation of RhB dye in aqueous solution was examined under radiation of ultraviolet (UV-C) light at different operating conditions, initial concentration of dye, irradiation time and amount of catalyst by UV–vis spectroscopy. The optimum amount of catalyst was found to be 0.6 g/L, and the highest degradation of RhB was obtained 80% for 240 min of irradiation time in the presence of synthesized ZnO NPs. The degradation process described by the first-order kinetic model.
