Enhanced CO2 separation through polyurethane membrane substituted by octadecylamine side chain

Novel poly(urethane-urea) (PUU) membrane containing a chain extender substituted by octadecylamine side chain was prepared to enhance gas permeation. Polytetramethylene glycol, and isophorone diisocyanate were served for PUU synthesis. The substituted PUU provided higher phase separation and lower glass transition temperature than linear PUU as the reference. Increased gas separation (82% and 30% improvements in CO2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity, respectively) was obtained by the substituted PUU as a result of increased phase separation and the plasticizing effect of aliphatic side chain. The main findings confirmed that the molecular design of the bulky PUU was in favor of CO2 separation.
