Synthesis and characterization of composite nano-adsorbents (TiO2/PVA and CeO2/PVA) for effective adsorption of Se(IV)

Abstract
In current study, two kinds of composite nano-adsorbents (TiO2/PVA and CeO2/PVA) were synthesized using the Casting method and applied for the batch mode equilibrium Selenium adsorption processes from aqueous solutions. Se adsorption experiments have been performed under the best pH conditions reported in the literature (3.36), at ambient temperature over 24 h to ensure equilibrium. The XRD results demonstrated that in both sorbents, the metal-oxide nanoparticles are successfully coated on the polymeric basis; in addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that both metal oxide particles were perched on polymer base but TiO2/PVA adsorbent had better dispersion of particles. BET analysis also showed that TiO2/PVA adsorbents have higher porosity at micropore and mesopore scale. Se concentration measurement was carried out by ICP analysis and TiO‌2/PVA showed a little higher adsorption capacity than CeO2/PVA may be attributed to the more dispersed distribution of Ti-containing nanoparticles and more extended porosity of the first sample.
