Control of a continuous biodiesel production reactor

Biodiesel is a sustainable fuel mainly produced by transesterification of oils. The control of the biodiesel production reactor is a challenging problem due to the nonlinearity of the process. In this work, an adaptive multivariable generalized model predictive control(GPC) has been applied to a biodiesel reactor to control the mass fraction of the produced ester and the reactor temperature. Based on open loop responses, a linear transfer function between system inputs and outputs has been obtained. To capture the system nonlinear dynamics, the model parameters updated at each sampling time. The results indicate that the controller has a good performance in setpoint tracking, load rejection and in case of model mismatch.
