Support effect on the catalytic activity of NiMo catalysts during the hydrodesulfurization of thiophene and dibenzothiophene

Abstract
In the present study, a series of NiMo catalysts supported on alumina, bentonite and clinoptilolite was prepared and applied to the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of thiophene and dibenzothiophene. The supported catalysts were characterized by XRD analysis and the recorded profiles confirmed the formation of NiMoO4 and MoO3 as the crystallite phase on the supports. The HDS performance of prepared catalysts was evaluated using thiophene and dibenzothiophene as model sulfur compound at 160 °C under atmospheric pressure. The thiophene HDS result over NiMo catalysts supported on alumina, bentonite and clinoptilolite was around 95%, 60% and 70%, respectively. The results demonstrated that the NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst showed higher HDS activates in comparison with the activated bentonite and clinoptilolite.
