Rapid industrial growth has led to the production and release of more organic and inorganic
wastewater into the environment. Due to the limited water resources in the world, the issue of
water treatment is of great importance to the environment and human life. One of the most
common industrial pollutants is heavy metals that occur in various industries, especially power
plants, petroleum and petrochemical industries. Therefore, the separation of heavy metals from
various wastewater has been considered by researchers and manufacturerer in recent years.
Adsorption is one of the most cost-effective methods for the removal of heavy metals. Among the
methods of adsorption, the use of polymeric adsorbents as a new topic has been widely interested
in recent years. In this paper, an overview study on the adsorption method using polymeric
adsorbents has been performed. The method of fabricating polymeric adsorbents and some cases
of polymeric adsorbent composites for the removal of heavy metals as well as the biopolymer
adsorbents have been collected. The results of the studies showed that polymeric adsorbents can be
considered as good adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals due to their high contact surface
area, controllable surface chemistry and proper mechanical strength.
