Replacing the Conventional Sulfur Recovery Unit in Refineries by the Methanol Thiolation Unit: A Technical and Economic Evaluation

A new process solution for converting sour off gas to high value methanethiol product is proposed in this paper. The proposed process consists an Amine unit together with a Methanol thiolation unit. Methanol thiolation process is simulated and the main equipments are sized. The capital cost is estimated and the operating cost is calculated. The financial results are compared with a conventional process consisting an Amine and sulfur recovery unit (SRU). The results show a capital cost reduction of 70% and operating cost increase of 47% but an internal rate of return equal to 86.2% for proposed process. The dynamic pay back period is 1.1 years.
