Effect of viscosity and density ratio on droplet formation in flow-focusing devices

Abstract
In this study, droplet formation in flow-focusing devices was investigated based on two-dimensional numerical simulation with volume of fluid method. Two flow regimes were observed in the droplet formation by CFD simulation. In addition, the effect of viscosity of continuous phase and density ratio were investigated. The result showed, when viscosity exceeds about 0.1 kg/m.s the flow regime changes from dripping to jetting. Smaller droplets produced with increasing continuous phase viscosity from 0.005 kg/m.s to 1.5 kg/m.s, as well as the size of the droplets produced are different. Also when density ratio increases from 0.55 to 1.44, size of droplets and frequency of formation decrease.
