Influence of Alcohols on the Post-treatment of Polyethersulfone Membranes, for Prevention of Collapsing Phenomenon

Collapsing of the membrane is an undesirable phenomenon about ultrafiltration membranes prepared by phase inversion methods. Since this phenomenon takes place during drying process, a post-treatment stage was used before drying process. In this study, 2-propanol and glycerol were used as alcohol in post-treatment stage for prevention of membrane collapsing. The results of pure water permeability tests showed that the flux of membranes which was prepared by post-treatment was close to the polyethersulfone ( PES ) membrane flux in wet state. Also porosity and mean pore radius analysis were demonstrate that the post-treatment had positive effects on prevention of membrane collapsing.
