Preparation and Evaluation of Polyvinyl chlorid composite membrane fabricated on a nonwoven fabric

The polyvinyl chloride (PVC) flat-sheet composite membranes were prepared using hydrophilic polyester nonwoven fabric as a support via non-solvent induced phase separation method. That was prepared by blending 15 wt.% of PVC in N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone (NMP) with polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) as an additive on support. The prepared membranes have been evaluated by SEM and mechanical properties and water permeability. SEM indicates the porous top layer and finger-like structure in the intermediate layer of the membrane nonwoven support on the bottom. The stress-strain mechanical test shows an excellent mechanical behavior by casting on nonwoven support. The results showed that membrane without nonwoven fabric has 4-5 MPa mechanical resistance whereas with nonwoven fabric has mechanical resistance more than 30 MPa. The membrane fabricated on nonwoven fabric performance results show that the maximum amount of pure water flux was related to the membranes with 200 µm thickness of polymer and the amount was 469.897 (lit/m2.h).
