Abstract
CFD simulation of a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) desalination system containing a PVDF flat sheet membrane and in a counter-current flow module was performed. A two-dimensional model was used and the governing equations for momentum, heat and mass transfer in the three regions i.e., feed channel, membrane and permeate channel were solved and corresponding velocity, temperature and concentration fields were obtained and purified water flux through the membrane was calculated. The finite element method was applied for solving the governing equations. The model results were validated with the reported experimental data and a high conformity was observed. The maximum deviation for the outlet concentration and hot outlet temperature with different feed velocities and temperatures was less than 0.35%.
