Cephalexin degradation by a binary visible-light driven photocatalyst

Abstract
A promising method is required to treat wastewater, including non-biodegradable drugs. In this research, the binary CuWO4/ Bi2S3 was applied for Cephalexin (CFX) degradation. The effect of illumination time (60-180 min), pollutant concentration (10-50 ppm), pH (3-11) and light intensity (200-600 W/m2) on the photodegradation of CFX by the binary CuWO4/ Bi2S3 composite was investigated. Based on the results, the degradation efficiency was reduced from 75% to 43% by the elevation of CFX concentration from 10 to 50 ppm. The efficiency was also improved by time increase (from 60 min to 180 min) and pH reduction (from 11 to 3). However, light intensity had an optimum value at 400 W/m2, showing no considerable enhancement with further increase of the light intensity.
