Pervaporation characteristics of PEBX-2533 membrane for separation of dimethyl sulfoxide from aqueous solutions

Abstract
The separation of demethylsolfoxide mixture from aqueous solution, is carried out by pervaporation membrane process. The PBAX-2533 membrane was synthesized by the solution casting and solvent evaporation method. The prepared membrane was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The flux of the membrane and the swelling degree were examined for the separation of dimethyl sulfoxide from their aqueous solutions (5, 10 and 15 wt. %). Results showed that total permeances for the prepared membrane were increased with increasing the amount of DMSO in the feed mixture. The maximum permeance was found to be 1.21 kg/m2 h at 25 oC.
