Separation of Ziziphora Essence by Organic and Acidic Solvents

Abstract
There are various methods and solvents for extracting plant essences. In this study, the extraction efficiency and the type of compounds obtained from extraction of Kakoti essence were evaluated by rotary evaporator by using 80% Methanol, and Citric acid with pH = 5.5. Chemical compounds were identified by gas chromatography-coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The extraction efficiency of the essence with methanol was 0.45%, and 22 chemical compounds were identified, which contained 4.736% Pulegone. The extraction efficiency with Citric acid was 0.31%, and 27 chemical compounds were identified, which contained 3.475% Pulegone. The results show the separation efficiency and chemical compounds identification strongly affected by the type of solvent used.
