Preparation and characterization of polydopamine coated PVDF membrane and its application for Diclofenac removal

In this study, nanofiltration membrane was prepared via the mussel-inspired deposition of polydopamine (PDA) on PVDF support membrane in presence of trimesoyl chloride (TMC) as a cross-linker for coating Dopamine. The pure PVDF and PDA/PVDF membranes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and contact angle measurement. The separation performance of resultant membranes was studied for Diclofenac removal at 50 ppm. The results revealed that the coating polydopamine layer on PVDF membrane decreased Pure Water Flux from 9.8 to 2.6 l/(m2.h.bar) and increased rejection of Diclofenac from 76 to 87 %.
