Effect of vapor induced phase separation parameters in controlling the morphology of polyethersulfone microfiltration membrane

Polyethersulfone microfiltration (MF) membranes can be fabricated by the vapor induced phase separation (VIPS) process. In this work, The effect of different exposure times of non-solvent vapors and the temperature of the coagulation bath was investigated on the membrane morphology and performance. For this purpose, five membranes have been prepared and comparative analysis was conducted. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that the morphology of the membranes was changed depending on the exposure time and the unique morphologies, including an hour-glass structure, can be obtained. Also, the comparison between the average pore size and porosity samples revealed that the exposure time is more effective than the temperature.
