The effect of solid particles on gas hold up in internal and external loop airlift reactors

The effect of solid particles on gas hold up in airlift bioreactors is studied in this research. Reactors have internal and external flow loops that include water as a liquid phase, air as a gas phase and solid particles with diameters of 0.3 and 0.5 mm and volume concentrations are 5% and 10%.The existence of solid particles could lay a great impact on gas hold up especially on mass transfer. Studies have shown solid particles can increase gas hold up with destroying the desire of attaching gas bubbles or decrease gas hold up with creating big gas bubbles in higher concentration as a result of having a pseudo viscous surrounding. Therefore solid particles with various size and concentration have different effects on gas hold up. In this article, the effect of solid particles on gas hold up in airlift bioreactors with internal and external flow loops is considered, moreover the comparison of gas hold up in manifold concentrations and diameters with different aeration volume is studied.
